AnderBois and partner organization open field station

Linguistics professor Scott AnderBois traveled to Ecuador to continue work with A'i colleagues on A'ingae dictionary, making use of the new field station built with ICCA, an indigenous-led NGO.

Prof. AnderBois traveled to Sucumbíos, Ecuador as part of his long-term collaboration with speakers of A'ingae, an indigenous language that AnderBois has studied for nearly 10 years.

AnderBois joined the A'ingae Language Documentation Project for several weeks of intensive work on the A'ingae dictionary the team is working on in addition to advancing several other projects. The team also had virtual presentations of collaborative work on ethnolinguistic vitality (w/ Mateo Pomilia, Arizona), the phonetics and phonology of nasality (w/ Ryan Bennett, UCSC), conjunction (w/ Brown undergrad alum Nathaniel Scott '24, Daniel Altshuler, Oxford, and Guillaume Guitang, Oxford), and associated motion (w/ current undergrad Claire Robertson).

In addition to all the exciting work, this summer was the inaugural use of the Reventador field station recently built by AnderBois' partner organization, ICCA (Instituto de Conservación y Capacitación Ambiental), an environmental and research NGO directed by Brown undergrad alum (and member of the Comunidad Cofán Zábalo) Hugo Lucitante '19. It was thrilling to see the vision for the field station realized, and impactful to have a great place for the team to work as a team, stay together, and enjoy the views of the Reventador volcano when the clouds abated!
