Polly Jacobson gave an invited talk at the conference "English Language and Linguistic Theory: A Tribute to Geoff Pullum" held at the University of Edinburgh on Aug. 31. Polly's talk was entitled "From GPSG to CG (and partway back again): Evidence from Coordination" and dealt with some relatively unexplored facts concerning coordination both in traditional 'extraction' constructions and in other lesser studied constructions. The intention of this talk was to argue for a view of syntactic categories taken in some versions of Categorial Grammar, and to show at the same time that certain claims that were made as early as Gazdar, Klein, Pullum and Sag (1985) are supported by some subtle and hitherto undiscussed facts about coordination.
