Together with partners at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Education department, and the Coalition for a Multilingual Rhode Island, Brown Linguistics hosted an event K'iche' in community: amplifying voices of indigenous Guatemalans in Rhode Island on April 16th. The event brought together a broad audience of interested folks to talk about K'iche', an indigenous Mayan language of Guatemala spoken by a substantial community here in Rhode Island.
As part of the event, students from Scott AnderBois' class LING 1870 Linguistic Field Methods presented some of the things they've learned working this semester with a speaker of the Joyabaj dialect of K'iche'. As one of the audience members commented, the students served as great ambassadors for Linguistics!
